Finding Movement in a Busy Life: Simple Ways to Stay Active
By Alison Embrey, PostGlo Student Intern
Let’s be honest. We have all had long days where the idea of hitting the gym or going outside for a run seems unrealistic. Maybe you had a stressful and overwhelming day at work or you've been so busy it's been hard to find time to do anything for yourself. Even just the thought of having to get up and exercise may feel physically and mentally exhausting. What if I told you that exercising doesn’t have to be some overwhelming monumental task? Would you believe that incorporating as little as 10 minutes of movement a day may help relieve stress? Exercise is actually one of the best ways for your body to naturally reduce stress. It helps to boost chemicals called endorphins that promote a sense of well being through the release of dopamine and can help regulate your overall mood. 1
The opportunities for creating movement in your personal life are endless. It could be going outside for a walk, taking a dance class, or even deep cleaning your house! Discovering the type of movement that you find enjoyable is the best way to maintain an active lifestyle while juggling a busy schedule.
What are the best tips to fit working out movement into a busy schedule?
Finding time in your schedule for movement may feel daunting at first, but I promise it can become second nature. Here are my top five 5 tips to get you started:
Plan Ahead
One of the best things you can do for yourself is planning ahead. Make movement a priority by scheduling it into your week. Try entering it into your daily planner or in your phone calendar.
Be Realistic
If you have a full schedule for one or two days, be sure to schedule a 10 minute walk outside or have a dance party with your family. Movement doesn’t have to always be a 30-45 minute workout video or class to be effective.
Start Small
Start with a 5-10 minute walk or a 5-10 minute yoga video online. Any movement is better than none!
Find a Workout Buddy
Having someone right by your side to encourage and support you may create a more comfortable and enjoyable workout atmosphere. The addition of a workout partner may create a level of accountability, which can improve your overall consistency of exercise.
Let Yourself Experiment
If you are just beginning to incorporate movement into your daily routine you may find it beneficial to play around with the times of day that you can fit in exercise. Try early morning workouts, try mid afternoon, try the evening, or even a late night workout! Try it all! As you try different times of the day, you’ll discover when you have the most energy to maximize your workout.
Why is movement so important?
Dedicating time everyday for movement is one of the most valuable things you can do for your health. Movement is not only ideal for physical health but it also provides various mental health benefits as well. It can improve cardiovascular health, strengthen bones and muscles, and enhance overall cognitive function.2 Movement also creates hormones that may ultimately reduce depression and anxiety which may improve your sleeping patterns.3 According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, staying active everyday allows your body’s temperature to rise and fall, which can improve your quality of sleep.4
How can you make movement fun?
Many people tend to dread the idea of exercising because it may seem like a burden to their busy lives. The key thing to remember is movement means something different for everyone. Just because your neighbor runs five miles every morning, doesn't mean you have to! Find something that feels comfortable for you, and make a commitment to stick with it. If you are someone that loves to be outside you could try going for an early morning bike ride, taking a walk with your pets or family, or gardening. If you enjoy working out within the comfort of your own home you can try a YouTube workout video, or an at home exercise challenge. If you are motivated by working out around others, sign up for a local gym membership and try different workout classes to find the right fit for you.
So, what’s PostGlo’s verdict? As it is challenging to run on a busy schedule, do your best to fit some form of movement in when you can. All movement counts! Remember, there are many ways to make movement attainable for your busy lifestyle. Planning ahead, being realistic, starting small, finding a workout partner, and letting yourself experiment are all great ways to start. Movement is beneficial for both your physical and mental health. Making it a priority will help lead you to a happy and healthy lifestyle that will improve your quality of life for years to come!
